On Demand Distribution (OD2)

Product Manager & Head of Professional Services

2000 – 2006 Bristol, UK

OD2 was a venture capital backed start-up. The first business in Europe, possibly the world, offering digital music to consumers from all of the major record labels. I was the first, permanent employee, joining the founding team and one or two contract developers.

The company grew rapidly and in this role I managed two teams simultaneously – handling product development and operations. The first was a tech team developing an online music catalogue and royalty payments platform. The second team populated the digital music catalogue from all major record labels. One of the first of its kind in the world, the catalogue was the first to reach one million available songs and its model and subscriptions royalty payment methodology was replicated by services such as Spotify and Napster. During this time we also reached agreement with the Official Chart Company for digital music to be included in the music charts for the first time.

I later led client integration, professional services delivery and payment services including developing a bespoke payment gateway that processed $12m of annual international card and premium SMS payments from end customers as well as payments from PayPal and other gateways. The Professional Services division also contributed up to 40% of the company’s annual revenue. I was responsible for pre-sales solution architecture and delivery of integration software and support through a dedicated development team.

Nokia acquired OD2 in 2006 by buying their parent company Loudeye (by this time a shell company with OD2 its only asset).
