IBM & University of Portsmouth

1989 – 1992 Portsmouth, UK

In a UK first, IBM partnered with the University of Portsmouth to offer a jointly awarded and sponsored degree scheme. After a tough selection process I was lucky enough to be one of only 19 students awarded a place on the third year intake of this scheme, earning a (small) salary from IBM for the three years.

I spent part of each week working in IBM’s head office at North Harbour, Portsmouth and the rest of the time studying at the university. I also attended an intensive six week summer school each year.

My final year project / dissertation was an actual piece of industrial project work, designing and coding order maintenance functions for IBM’s room-sized, water-cooled, build-to-order mainframes.

Thirty years later my degree parchment is a rare thing, bearing a company logo as its joint awarder.
